masters laid out on the shop table

our story

not just a tile company

planck is a small shop making tiles whose faces hold a figure. it is the work of one maker, matt pray, in hamilton, ontario.

the job is simple. mill a master. take a mold. pour the face. colour lives in the mix. when the tiles sit together, the relief is meant to run across the joint. that is the wall.

molds and masters in the hamilton shop

the shop

a table in hamilton

there is no factory floor. there is a table, a mill, and the record of every figure cut so far. each master is two parts: a milled face on a particle-board backing, walls on the sides so the cast keeps a square.

from that master we take the mold, then pour. what leaves the shop is a tile you can hold. packs of four, so a designer can feel the wall before a room is finished.

six-inch tile masters on the workbench

the figure

six inches, continued

every tile is 6 inches by 6 inches. one size, one rate: forty dollars a square foot. four figures in the catalog now. if a wall needs a figure we have not cut, that is a new master. write and say what the space is for.

the colours are mineral. white limestone, terracotta, sage, charcoal, and the rest of the body. nothing is printed on. nothing is a glaze sitting on top.
